Baker was a chorister in Win­ches­ter Cathedral for seven years, part of which time Sam­u­el Wes­ley was the organist. He studied harmony under Fred­er­ick Il­iffe, and went on to play the organ at Christ Church, San­down, Isle of Wight (1864–72), then at St. Sav­iour’s, Shank­lin, Isle of Wight, where he served almost three decades.
