In 1909, Baird graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, where he edited of the student yearbook and wrote the lyrics to the school song. He taught for a while at the school, then entered the army in World War I, where he served as a lieutenant in the Sanitary Corps. Upon returning to civilian life, he went to work for the city of Pittsburgh. By the time he retired in 1961, he was senior research analyst for the Department of City Planning. His works include:
