An Amer­i­can ci­vil war vet­er­an, Atch­in­son was or­dained a Meth­od­ist min­is­ter Sep­tem­ber 6, 1874, and served in New York and Mi­chi­gan. He was a strong ad­vo­cate of Sun­day Schools, writ­ing ma­ny hymns and songs for that min­is­try.
