Jonathan was the son of Henry M. Atch­in­son and An­nah Burtch.

An Amer­ic­an civil war veteran, he was ordained a Me­tho­dist minister September 6, 1874, and served in New York and Michigan.

He was a strong advocate of Sunday Schools, writing many hymns and songs for that ministry.
