Son of John Will­iam Ast­ley of Du­kin­field, Che­shire, Charles was ed­u­cat­ed at Je­sus Coll­ege, Ox­ford (of which he was a Schol­ar; BA 1847, MA 1849). Tak­ing Ho­ly Or­ders in 1849, he was Even­ing Lec­tur­er, Bid­e­ford, 1849; In­cum­bent of Hol­well, Ox­ford, 1850-54; Vi­car of Mar­gate (1854-1864); Rec­tor of Bras­ted (1864-78); and min­is­ter of a Pres­by­ter­i­an con­gre­ga­tion at Llandudno, Wales (1879). His works in­clude:
