An Ox­ford graduate (MusB 1848, MusD 1864), Armes was a chorister under Ze­cha­ri­ah Buck at Nor­wich, and at Ro­ches­ter Cathedral under J. L. Hop­kins.

He went on to serve as organist at Trinity Church, Mil­ton, Graves­end, Kent (1854); St. An­drew’s, Wells Street (1857); Chi­ches­ter Cathedral (1861); and Dur­ham Cathedral (1861–1907). He was also a Professor of Music at Dur­ham University (1897).
