Introduction

Born: March 24, 1740, Fred­er­ick, Penn­syl­van­ia.

Died: De­cem­ber 17, 1811, Bris­tol, Eng­land.

Buried: The site of the Mo­ra­vi­an church Antes at­tend­ed, and its ad­join­ing bur­i­al ground, were re­de­vel­oped some years ago. The build­ing it­self dis­ap­peared long be­fore that. The lo­ca­tion of An­tes’ bo­dy is known on­ly to God.

Biography

Antes was a Mo­ra­vi­an min­is­ter and mis­sion­a­ry, a watch­mak­er by pro­fess­ion.

In 1764, he was called to ser­vice at Herrn­hut, Sax­ony, in­ter­na­tion­al head­quar­ters of the Mo­ra­vi­ans.

He was or­dained in 1769, and spent the next 12 years in Egypt as the first Am­er­i­can mis­sion­a­ry there.

In 1781, he left for two years in Ger­ma­ny be­fore set­tling in Ful­neck, Eng­land.
