1740–1811

March 24, 1740, Frederick, Pennsylvania.

December 17, 1811, Bristol, England.

The site of the Moravian church Antes attended, and its adjoining burial ground, were redeveloped some years ago. The building itself disappeared long before that. The location of Antes’ body is known only to God.

Antes was a Moravian minister and missionary, a watchmaker by profession. In 1764, he was called to service at Herrnhut, Saxony, international headquarters of the Moravians. He was ordained in 1769, and spent the next 12 years in Egypt as the first American missionary there. In 1781, he left for two years in Germany before settling in Fulneck, England.
