Anselm was a bishop of Luc­ca, Ita­ly; the city of Ma­ntua regards him as its patron saint. His successor, Ran­ger­i­us, wrote a biography of him.

He is sometimes confused with his uncle of the same name, who later became Pope Al­ex­an­der II.
