1638-1683 Abbess of Quedlinburg
Anna Sophia of Hessen-Darmstadt (1638-1683)

December 17, 1638, Marburg, Germany.

December 13, 1683, Quedlinburg, Germany.

Daughter of Landgrave Georg II of Hessen-Darmstadt, Anna was carefully educated. In 1657 she was elected Pröbstin of the Lutheran Fürsten-Töchter-Stift at Quedlinburg; she became Abbess there in 1680. Her hymns, contemplations on the union of the soul with Christ, in the spirit of the Canticles, mostly appeared in her devotional work:

  1. Rede, liebster Jesu
  2. Wohl dem der Jesum liebet
    • How Happy They, Who Know and Love
    • What Joy to Love the Savior
