Angell earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano and composition from Syracuse University, New York, and a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University Teachers College (1944). He taught piano and theory at Murray State Teachers College, and headed the piano department there (1934–36). In 1936, then became Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Oklahoma Baptist University; the college was renamed the Warren M. Angell College of Fine Arts in 1956. He founded the Bison Glee Club in 1938, and sang with Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians and the Robert Shaw Chorale. He also served on the committee for the 1956 American Baptist Hymnal.
