Amps was educated at Pe­ter­house, Cam­bridge (BA 1858, MA 1862). He played the organ at the Col­lege for some time, and at King’s Col­lege (1855–76) and Christ’s Col­lege.

He conducted the Camb­ridge Un­i­ver­si­ty Musical Society for many years, and was known as a composer of pi­a­no­for­te so­na­tas and part songs.
