Youngest child of Lewis and Louisa Yeomans Johnson, Lewis Amis grad­u­at­ed from Van­der­bilt Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1878, and in Oc­to­ber that year joined the Ten­nes­see Con­fer­ence of the Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church, South. He served as as­sist­ant sec­re­ta­ry of the Ten­nes­see Meth­odist Con­fer­ence from 1880-1895, and sec­re­ta­ry from 1895 un­til his death. He filled ma­ny ap­point­ments, and was serv­ing as pas­tor in Pu­las­ki, Ten­nes­see, at the time of his death.

Amis mar­ried Ag­nes Jane Fult­on in 1884 and had five child­ren, three of whom lived to adult­hood.
