A well known music educator, Allen was an organ scholar at Christ Col­lege, Cam­bridge, and served as organist at St. Asaph’s and Ely Ca­thed­ral (1898–1901) and New Col­lege, Oxford (1901–18). He became conductor of the Lon­don Bach Choir in 1907, helped direct the Leeds Festival in 1913, became director of the Royal Col­lege of Music in 1918, and was knighted in 1920.
