Allen worked in the Salvation Army (SA) from around 1882–99. He was bandmaster of the New Brompton Corps for about seven years, and later a junior soldiers’ sergeant-mavjor.
Proficient in playing many instruments, he would often introduce new songs as part of his personal testimony.
After leaving the SA, he served in mission work with the young, and was associated with the Christian Scientist denomination when he was older.
