Allen was ed­u­cat­ed in Kirk­by Lons­dale. Af­ter liv­ing for a while in Glas­gow, he re­turned to Kirk­by Lons­dale and worked at the lo­cal bank. He pub­lished 148 hymns in Hymns of the Christ­ian Life (Lon­don: Nis­bet, 1861).
