Hattie was the daughter of Henry Austin and Carrie Lucretta Adams McCracken, and wife of minister Clifton Judson Allen. She was educated at the Mississippi Women’s College (now the Mississippi University for Women), Columbus, Mississippi (BS 1922), and the George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee (MA 1928). She lived in Nashville, Tennessee; Hartsville, South Carolina; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

McCracken taught in rural schools and at Belmont College, Nashville, Tennessee (1959–61). She also edited children’s books for Broadman Press (1945–47). Her works include:
