Allen worked in the Salvation Army (SA) from approximately 1882 until 1899. He served as bandmaster of the New Brompton Corps for around seven years, and later as junior soldiers’ sergeant-major. Proficient in playing many instruments, he would often introduce new songs as part of his personal testimony. After leaving the SA, he served in mission work with the young, and was associated with the Christian Scientist denomination when he was older.
