Son of An­gli­can cler­ic H. G. Al­ing­ton of Can­dles­by, Lin­coln­shire, Cyr­il at­tend­ed Marl­bo­rough School and Trin­it­y Col­lege, Ox­ford (BA 1893, MA 1895, DD 1917). He be­came an Ang­li­can dea­con in 1899, and priest in 1901. He was a Fe­llow of All Souls (1896); as­sist­ant mas­ter at Marl­bo­rough Col­lege (1896-9) and Eton Col­lege (1899-1908); head mas­ter at Shrews­bu­ry School (1908-16) and Eton Col­lege (1917-33); and Dean of Dur­ham (1933-1951) . He pub­lished a num­ber of hymns, es­says, and books.
