Biography

Cyril was the son of Ang­li­can cler­ic H. G. Al­ing­ton of Can­dles­by, Lin­coln­shire.

He at­tend­ed Marl­bo­rough School, Saint Al­bans, and Tri­ni­ty College, Ox­ford (BA 1893, MA 1895, DD 1917).

He be­came an Ang­li­can dea­con in 1899, and priest in 1901.

He was a Fel­low of All Souls (1896); as­sist­ant mas­ter at Marl­bo­rough Col­lege (1896–99) and Eton Col­lege (1899–1908); head mas­ter at Shrews­bury School (1908–16) and Eton Col­lege (1917–33); Dean of Dur­ham (1933–51); and chap­lain to King George V.

He pub­lished a num­ber of hymns, es­says, and books.
