Son of Anglican cleric H. G. Alington of Candlesby, Lincolnshire, Cyril attended Marlborough School, Saint Albans, and Trinity College, Oxford (BA 1893, MA 1895, DD 1917). He became an Anglican deacon in 1899, and priest in 1901. He was a Fellow of All Souls (1896); assistant master at Marlborough College (1896–99) and Eton College (1899–1908); head master at Shrewsbury School (1908–16) and Eton College (1917–33); Dean of Durham (1933–51); and chaplain to King George V. He published a number of hymns, essays, and books.
