Alcock studied under Ar­thur Sul­li­van and John Stain­er at the National Training School of Music (1876–81).

He served as organist at churches in Twick­en­ham and Lon­don, and also played the organ at West­min­ster Ab­bey. In 1916, he became the organist for Sal­is­bu­ry Ca­thed­ral.

He played the organ at the coronations of King Ed­ward VII and King George V, and taught organ at the Royal College of Music. He had a number of accomplished students, including Ed­ward Bair­stow.
