Alcock studied under Arthur Sullivan and John Stainer at the National Training School of Music (1876–81), and served as organist in churches in Twickenham and London. He also played the organ at Westminster Abbey, and in 1916 became the organist for Salisbury Cathedral. He played the organ at the coronations of King Edward VII and King George V, and taught organ at the Royal College of Music. He had a number of accomplished students, including Edward Bairstow.
