A Methodist minister, Adams graduated from the Theological College in Richmond, England. In 1886, he went to Newfoundland as a missionary, and served at Burgeo, Topsail, and St. John’s West. In 1891, he transferred to Ontario, where he was pastor at Haliburton (1891–93), St. Ola (1893–95), Dalrymple (1895–97), Ivanhow (1897–99), Orono (1899–1901), Claremont (1901–03), Tamworth (1903–05), Norwood (1905–09), Penetanguishene (1909–12), Downsview (1914–18), Don Mills (1918–20), Thornton (1920–25) and Beeton (1925–28).
