Son of John Greenleaf and Mary Hall Barrett Adams, John attended high schools in Providence, Rhode Island and Lowell, Massachusetts, and, graduated from Tufts College, Massachusetts (AB 1870) & Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, Massachusetts (BD 1872). He served as pastor of the Newton Universalist Church, Newton, Massachusetts (1872-80); First Universalist Church, Lynn, Massachusetts (1880-84); St. Paul’s Universalist Church, Chicago, Illinois (1884-90); All Souls’ Universalist Church, Brooklyn, New York (1890-1901); and Church of the Redeemer, Hartford, Connecticut (1901-22). He became a trustee of Tufts College in 1880, and of the Universalist General Convention in 1895. His works include:
