Biography

Johnson was the hus­band of Ma­ry An­na Ly­on.

He was edu­cat­ed at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Ro­ches­ter (BA in Phi­lo­so­phy and Let­ters, 1862), then stu­died part time at the Ro­ches­ter Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry (1862–64).

He served as an Am­er­ican na­val of­fi­cer (1864–66), then en­tered the Bap­tist min­is­try in 1866. He served a pas­tor­ate in Le Sueur, Min­ne­so­ta (1866–68), then re­turned to Ro­ches­ter Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry, where he gra­du­at­ed in 1871.

He spent two years tra­vel­ing in Eur­ope, the Ho­ly Land and Egypt, af­ter which he pas­tored in Ball­ston, New York (1875–83).

From 1883 un­til his death he was pro­fess­or of sys­te­ma­tic theo­lo­gy at Cro­zer Theo­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary, Ches­ter, Penn­syl­van­ia.
