Biography

Ellerton gra­du­at­ed from Tri­ni­ty Col­lege, Cam­bridge, and en­tered the min­is­try in 1850.

In 1852, he was lec­tur­er of St. Pe­ter’s, Brigh­ton. He al­so served as vi­car at St. Ni­cho­las’, Brigh­ton.

In 1860, he be­came chap­lain for Lord Crewe and vi­car of Crewe Green, Che­shire.

In 1872, he be­came rec­tor of Hin­stock, Shrop­shire.

From 1884–85, he was a chap­lain in Pegli, It­aly.

Upon re­turn to Bri­tain, he set­tled in­to his fin­al par­ish, White Rod­ing, Ut­tles­ford dis­trict, Es­sex.

During his last ill­ness, he re­ceived the hon­or­ary ti­tle of Can­on of St. Al­bans Ca­thed­ral.

He was a rec­og­nized au­thor­i­ty on hymns, con­trib­ut­ed to Hymns An­cient and Mo­dern, and wrote or trans­lat­ed over 80 hymns.
