Henry was the son of Edmund Edwin Coffin and Euphemia Sloane, and husband of Dorothy Prentice.
He was educated at Yale College (BA 1897, master’s degree 1900) and Union Theological Seminary (BD 1900). He became pastor of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City in 1910.
Sloane was a fellow of the Corporation of Yale University (1922–45), and served as president of Union Theological Seminary (1926–45), and moderator of the 155th Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the USA (1943–44).
