Biography

Henry was the son of Ed­mund Ed­win Cof­fin and Eu­phe­mia Sloane, and hus­band of Do­ro­thy Pren­tice.

He was edu­cat­ed at Yale Col­lege (BA 1897, mas­ter’s de­gree 1900) and Union Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry (BD 1900). He be­came pas­tor of the Ma­di­son Ave­nue Pres­by­te­ri­an Church in New York Ci­ty in 1910.

Sloane was a fel­low of the Cor­po­ra­tion of Yale Uni­ver­si­ty (1922–45), and served as pre­si­dent of Un­ion Theo­lo­gic­al Se­mi­na­ry (1926–45), and mod­er­at­or of the 155th As­sem­bly of the Pres­by­te­ri­an Church in the USA (1943–44).
